MSc Horticulture

Full-time: 12 months

This programme provides advanced instruction in horticulture, as preparation for a career in any aspect of the subject, including specialisation in crop production, and crop protection. Environmentally desirable production methods are emphasised.

Programme content

Topics covered, according to options selected include: temperate/tropical crop production; technology of vegetable/fruit production; greenhouse technology; integrated pest management; biological contol; plant biotechnology; organic and sustainable horticulture; environmental plant physiology; urban landscapes; climate change and food systems; and weed management. First-hand experience of research is provided through a four-month project on an area of specific interest to the student.

Visits to commerical and research establishments form an integral part of the programme. These are supplemented by a residential field course in which students undertake a tour of sites in the UK. An introductory programme in statistics is provided.

Careers

Recent graduates have gone on to work as horticulturalists in production or government or follow PhD programmes.

Entry Requirements :

A second class Honours degree in an environmental or biological science or an equivalent qualification.
