The course is designed for those wishing to acquire skills and understanding of the field of agricultural development. This may then be applied in jobs in policy analysis, programme management, and research with agencies charged with promoting agricultural and rural development - be they international bodies, national governments, non-governmental organisations, policy think-tanks, or commercial companies.
Applicants to this programme require an intermediate knowledge of micro-economics, but strong applicants with little or no prior training in economics may be admitted provided they attend the pre-sessional one month course in economics organized by the Graduate Institute in September.

Students take 100 credits in core modules:
- Market and Trade Analysis
- Consumer and Producer Theory
- Qualitative Research Methods
- Econometrics
- Economics of International Food Markets
- Research and Study Skills for Independant Learning
- Policy Analysis
- Resource and Environmental Economics
- Appraisal of Agricultural and Rural Development Projects
- Poverty, inequality and Livelihoods.
Plus a further 20 taught credits. You will also prepare a dissertation on a relevant topic to be agreed with their Course Director.
