The MA in ELT programme aims to connect theory and practice in language teaching, providing up-to-date knowledge of principles and issues in the field, together with consideration of their practical implications. It is designed especially for those working in the field of English as a second/foreign language and has modules in language description, in pedagogy and in specialist-related fields with this audience in mind.

Programme Content :

The programme includes general core modules dealing with the following areas: Phonetics and Phonology, English Grammar, Discourse Analysis, Second Language Learning Principles, Language Curriculum Design, Research Design. In addition, students will choose from a range of pedagogically oriented options, including: Teaching Spoken Language, Teaching Written Language, Teaching Young Learners, IT for Language Teachers, Language Testing.

You must choose one of three tracks: Dissertation (core modules, three options and a 15,000 word dissertation); Taught (core modules and six options); or Portfolio (core modules, three options and a language teaching portfolio). The Portfolio track is designed for those with little or no classroom teaching experience and the language teaching portfolio will involve classroom observation, micro-teaching and in-depth analyses of learner data.

Entry Requirements:


Applicants should normally have a good relevant university degree. In addition, for the Dissertation and Taught tracks, they should have at least two year's full-time experience in teaching English as a second or a foreign language (this experience is not required for the Portfolio track). Non-graduate applicants may be admitted if they have a relevant teaching qualification and several years' teaching experience.
