MA (Res) Ancient Art

This degree deals with all aspects of art in ancient societies, focusing especially on function and meaning in ancient societies, focusing especially on function and meaning and the methods necessary to study it. Teaching makes use of the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology and other museums in the region.

In their first term all students take a 'Research Methods' module which covers key skills in an intensive series of workshops; and a module entitled 'Approaches to Ancient Art' which addresses both specialist skills and questions of methodology and theory. They may, if they choose, also study Ancient Greek or Latin at a level appropriate to them, or a modern language. In the second term, students continue their language study and also choose options from a broad Special Options module; they also may take courses offered through the department of History of Art and Architecture. In the third term students research a 20,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice under the supervision of an expert in that area.

A good Honours degree is required in an appropriate discipline, e.g. Classics, Ancient History, History, Religious Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, English Literature, Philosophy, etc.
