Teacher Education (ITT/E) Primary
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Early Years (Foundation & Key stage 1) or Primary (Key stages 1 and 2)
with specialisms in Art, Music or English
High quality education is essential if individuals are to realise their full potential and the teacher is fundamental in that process. The development of teachers at all stages of their careers is a task of the utmost importance.
Our Initial Teacher Education and Training (ITT/E) Programmes are based on the view that education is about active and meaningful learning through which students should become analytical, creative and receptive to new ideas. By working with Partnership schools and Mentor teachers on our programmes, we aim to raise the standards of newly qualified members on entry to the teaching profession.
Programme Structure
The programme is divided into blocks of Subject Specialist and Professional and Curriculum Subjects Studies.
Subject specialism study
The Subject Specialist Studies programme enables you to pursue your academic interest at university level to honours standard. Descriptions of the programme appear under each specialism. Three subjects, Art, English and Music are available.
Professional experience
The Professional Studies and Child Development programme investigates the changing role of the classroom teacher, the intellectual, emotional and social development of children and the context of the school. You will also be introduced to the three core and all foundation subjects of the National Curriculum including ICT. You will have opportunities to teach across the 5-11 age range and to qualify as a Primary Practioner. Throughout the degree programme you will develop your understanding of children's learning; of a range of approaches to teaching; of curriculum planning; evaluation and assessment; of classroom organisation and management; of the legal requirements of the profession; and the wider life of the school community.
The third term of the first year includes a block of school experience when you will undertake some practical teaching. The time allocation of School experience its character and focus will change as you progress through the degree programme until you finally take responsibility for a whole-class of pupils during a School Experience in Year 4.
In year 3, an integral feature of the Professional Studies course, is the opportunity to undertake a school placement in a Special Education Needs resource or unit linked to a mainstream classroom.
