Real Estate and Planning

Everyday we are influenced by the built environment around us. Offices, shops, industrial buildings, houses and the surrounding countryside all have an impact on the quality of our lives. Have you ever wondered how those properties were developed, who was responsible for managing them or how much they were worth? These programmes provide you with the opportunity to consider these questions and others so that you will be equipped to manage and influence the future environment.

Real Estate & Planning at Reading

We offer four degree courses; each has a different emphasis and focus but they are all broadly based on the management of a valuable resource - real estate. The key themes running through the courses are: development and planning; commercial property appraisal and management; investment and finance; rural property management. There is flexibility to move between programmes during the early stages of your study and so you only need to apply for one of our courses on your UCAS form.

Connections with Industry

Our courses are very well supported by industry. A number of leading organisations actively participate in teaching on our courses, providing you with valuable professional insight and industry feedback. Through our alumni association, the Reading Real Estate Foundation, we are able to offer one-to-one industry mentoring to all our students. This gives you a real insight into the property world and is a great opportunity for individual advice from one of our graduates already in the profession.

Career prospects

We are widely acknowledged by the major employers as one of Europe's leading providers of graduates in real estate and planning. We are very proud of our outstanding graduate employment record with over 97% of our students finding graduate level employment or further study within 6 months of leaving university (DHLE, 2010). Employers include major real estate advisors, property developers, planning consultancies and financial institutions. Typical job titles of our graduates include Graduate Surveyor, Investment Banker, Financial Analyst, Rural Surveyor and Planning Consultant. Increasingly, our students have used their degree to work internationally, as a stepping stone to further academic study or to move into other fields. Our alumni association organises events including an annual careers fair for Real Estate & Planning students and our evening lecture series, inviting key industry speakers to talk about topical issues whilst highlighting graduate opportunities and career prospects in the sector. We have our own Careers Development Advisor who can offer you help and guidance at every stage of the employment process.
