International Development and Applied Economics

The Graduate Institute of International Development and Applied Economics (GIIDAE) is part of the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development and

is responsible for all taught postgraduate courses formerly managed by the International and Rural Development Department (IRDD) and the Department of Food Economics and Marketing. Teaching is drawn from across

the University and, in blending the natural and social sciences, provides an interface between theoretical understanding and practical experience.

The Graduate Institute is located in a modern building with state-

of-the-art lecturing facilities, a PC lab with 24-hour access, wireless internet connection and its own catering facility.

Funding opportunities

A number of bursaries, some of which are linked to full scholarships, are available

for students from developing countries following the taught masters courses in international development which are

marked with an asterisk * in the following pages.

A full tuition scholarship is also available for a UK student following one of the Applied Economics courses (marked with a double asterisk * * in the following pages).

Full details of these, and other funding opportunities, are available on the Graduate Institute website.

Careers

The Masters degrees offered by the Graduate Institute are an excellent preparation for careers in a wide range of sectors including international development, agricultural economics, marketing within the food chain, and

rural development and policy. On graduation, students find employment with government departments, non-government development organisations, international agencies and commercial companies. Some students use a Masters course as a means of transition to a new

career as independent consultants. Others take study leave from their jobs and return with new insights, fresh ideas and enhanced skills.
