These lists are made up from various terms I have gleaned and
abbreviated from various sources ( in particular from the Aikido Primer and Aikido FAQ ) and from converstations on the Aikido_L mailing list. If you find any mistakes please e-mail me

STYLES
- Aikikai -

RANKS
- Kyu from 10 to 1: jukyu, kukyu, hachikyu, nanakyu, rokyu, gokyu,
yonkyu, sankyu, nikkyu, ikkyu.
- Dan from 1 to 9: shodan, nidan, sandan, yondan, godan, rokudan,
nanadan, hachidan, kudan.
HOLDS / ATTACKS
- Katate tori = One hand holding one hand.
- Morote tori = Two hands holding one hand.
- Kata tori = Shoulder hold.
- Ryokata tori = Grabbing both shoulders.
- Ryote tori = Two hands holding two hands.
- Mune dori = One or two hand lapel hold.
- Hiji tori = Elbow grab.
- Ushiro tekubi tori = Wrist grab from the back.
- Ushiro ryote tori = As above from the back.
- Ushiro ryokata tori = As above from the back.
- Ushiro kubi shime = Rear choke.
- Shomen uchi = Overhead strike to the head.
- Yokomen uchi = Diagonal strike to the side of the head.
- Tsuki = Straight thrust (punch), esp. to the midsection.
- Geri - kick
PRINCIPLES
- Ikkyo = omote and ura (irimi and tenkan). (a.k.a. oshi taoshi)
- Nikyo = omote and ura (irimi and tenkan) (a.k.a. kotemaki)
- Sankyo = omote and ura (irimi and tenkan)(a.k.a kote hineri or kote
mawashi)
- Yonkyo =omote and ura (irimi and tenkan)
- Gokyo = omote and ura (irimi and tenkan)
- Rokkyo-otherwise known as hiji-jime-osae, or by some associations
as waki-katame.
BASIC
THROWS
- Irimi nage = Entering throw (``20 year'' technique).
- Juju nage = Arm entwining throw (arms crossed, elbows locked)
- Kaiten nage = Rotary throw. uchi and soto (inside and outside),
omote and ura (irimi and tenkan)
- Kokyu ho = morotetori kokyu nage or ryotemochi kokynage ude-oroshi
irimi
- Kokyu nage = Breath throws.
- Koshi nage = Hip throw.
- Kote gaeshi = Wrist turn-out.
- Shiho nage = ``Four direction'' throw.
- Tenchi nage = ``Heaven and earth'' throw. omote and ura (irimi and
tenkan).
OTHER THROWS
- Aiki otoshi = entering more deeply and picking up uke's off-side
leg
- Hineri nage - Throwing by twisting the opponents head
- Kado otoshi - throw towards the front corner
- Kata gatame - form of soto kaiten nage but instead of throwing nage
performs a tenkan and locks the arm/elbow bringing uke to the
mat and pins as the nikkyo ending
- Maki otoshi - nage ends up down on one knee, having thrown uke
over nage's shoulder,
- Sudori nage - momentum throw
- Sukui nage - a scooping throw
- Suni gaeshi = corner throw.
- Sumi otoshi = ``Corner drop.'' omote and ura (irimi and tenkan).
- Tai-atari uchi otoshi - from yokomen-uchi, entering and
blocking.,uke gets thrown backwards
- Ushiro udoroshi - pull down from behind
- Kokyu dosa - Breath-power movement (from seiza)
TECHNIQUES
- Atemi waza -Techniques to strike a vital point
- Hanashi waza - escaping from holds (also hazushi waza)
- Hanmi-handatchi waza - one standing, one kneeling.
- Henka waza - Varied technique. Especially beginning one technique
and changing to another in mid-execution
- Hitori waza - 'invisible partner practice'
- Jiyu waza - Free-style practice of techniques.
- Kaeshi-waza - (reversals, escaping from techniques)
- Kansetsu waza - Joint manipulation techniques.
- Katame waza - ``Hold-down'' (pinning) techniques.
- Kihon waza - fairly static technique with uke getting a good strong
grip on grabs, 'basic techniques'
- Ne waza - grappling techniques
- Oji waza - to block then counter attack
- Osae waza - Pinning techniques.
- Randori - Free-style ``all-out'' training.
- Sukashi waza - Techniques performed without allowing the attacker
to complete a grab or to initiate a strike.
- Sutemi waza - a technique accomplished by sacrificing your body
- Suwari waza - Techniques executed with both uke and nage in a
seated position.
- Tachi waza - Standing techniques.
- Te waza - hand techniques
- Uchi waza - striking techniques
FORMS (as used by the Institue of Aikido)
- 1st form - Ai Hanmi Katatetori
- 2nd form - Gyaku hanmi Katatetori
- 3rd form - mae kata tori (one hand holding shoulder)
- 4th form - Mune tori (one hand holding lapels)
- 5th form - Shomen uchi (strike to top of head)
- 6th form - Yokomen uchi (strike to side of head)
- 7th form - chudan tsuki (punch to centre)
- 8th form - Ushiro kubi tori- (hold collar from behind)
- 9th form - gyaku hanmi hiji tori - (one hand holding elbow)
- 10th form - Katate tori ryotemouchi (two hands holding one wrist)
- 11th form - mae ryote tori - (holding both wrists from the front)
- 12th form - Mae Ryokata tori (two hands holding shoulders from the
front)
- 13th form - (basic = Ushiro ryote tori moving = Ushiro tekubi tori)

- 15th form - Ushiro ryokata tori (both shoulders held from behind)
- 16th form - Ushirotekubi-tori Kubi-shimi (Hold wrist and strangle from behind)
