The School of Mathematical, Physical and Computational Sciences (SMPCS) - comprising the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics, Meteorology, and Computer Science - aims to create a supportive and inclusive working environment for the benefit of all its staff and students.
We recognise that in some Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects there are equality and inclusivity issues for people with certain protected characteristics under the Equality Act (race, disability, age, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, sex, sexual orientation, religion/belief, pregnancy and maternity), as well as unprotected characteristics (e.g. socio-economic class, obesity).
We also recognise that more diverse institutions are more successful and innovative, and that when people feel free to be themselves at work they are more productive. We seek to enable all staff and students to fulfil their potential, and to foster a working environment that protects their physical and mental well-being.
The School has been engaged for several years with improving its working practices to promote equality and inclusivity. Examples of good practice include promotion of flexible working, a mentoring scheme, mandatory unconscious bias training for those involved in recruitment, and support for promotions. These practices are of benefit to all, and do not seek to target specific demographics.

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (as it was then) was awarded an Athena SWAN Silver award in 2010, renewed in 2014 and again in November 2017, in recognition of its good employment practices in relation to women working in science, engineering and technology (SET).
