The University of Reading Business School provides an ideal environment for academic research leading to a higher degree of either MPhil or PhD. The Business School has a large number of research students working in a variety of different fields and sub-disciplines within the broad economics, management, real estate and finance areas in which the Business School specialises. Our students come from all over the world, having already achieved a very high level of academic and professional standing in their home countries. A significant proportion of our research students have previously taken Masters degrees here at The University of Reading. Their positive experience at Reading encourages them to continue their studies here.

The aim of the Business School is to provide an atmosphere which is ideally suited for research students and conducive to the production of research which is of international standard.  Such an atmosphere is fostered by close links between students and their supervisors as well as between students and their research colleagues. Research students are encouraged to play active role in the many research seminars organised by the four departments within the Business School. These activities are intended to stimulate further research ideas and initiatives on the part of the students which will further contribute to the successful completion of their theses.

The Business School prides itself not only on the high quality of the PhD and MPhil theses produced but also the speed with which the research is completed.  Each year every student in the Business School presents detailed analysis of their research which is scrutinised by other members of the teaching staff as well as by other research colleagues. This continuous monitoring of a student’s progress helps to ensure that the thesis progresses at a satisfactory rate and in an appropriate direction to ensure a successful outcome.
