Philosophy at the University of Reading
We are a thriving department in the the School of Humanities at the University of Reading.
At the undergraduate level, we offer two single-honours degree courses: BA Philosophy, and BA Ethics, Value and Philosophy. We also offer several joint-degree courses.
We offer two intensive and respected Master's degree programmes, in Philosophy and in Ethics and Political Theory. In one year (full-time) or two years (part-time), you will develop your philosophical skills and knowledge beyond the undergraduate level. MA students write several extended essays and a dissertation.
We also offer specialised research training degrees.
BPA/SWIP Good Practice Scheme
We are committed to implementing the British Philosophical Association/Society for Women in Philosophy UK Good Practice Scheme. Please click here (pdf) for our implementation plan and report.
The department recently conducted an informal survey of current students. Here is a selection of anonymous comments from current students:
'Really interesting course with dedicated lecturers ... the range of modules available is excellent ... small classes, allowing for good debates, and ease when discussing topics with lecturers ... friendly staff [and] interesting subjects ... lecturers are inclusive and approachable ... very good library resources ... the lecturers are passionate about philosophy.'
Of course not all the remarks were so glowing! More critical responses included requests for more diverse module choices, more certainty about which third-year modules will be offered, and more promotion of the third-year dissertation option. We are taking these remarks on board, and are delighted with the very positive results of the survey.
