MSc Geoarchaeology

The MSc Geoarchaeology provides training in the range of earth science methods that are of growing importance in archaeology and palaeoenvironmental studies. It is designed to meet the needs of heritage and commercial organisations, which are increasingly carrying out assessments and field projects in landscapes where archaeology is present within sediment sequences.
The programme is organised by the Department of Archaeology, and includes collaborative interdisciplinary teaching and use of analytical facilities, particularly for soils and sediments teaching, in other departments within the School of Human and Environmental Sciences.
Programme Content:
The core programme modules cover the following topics in Geoarchaeology: Principles and Practice; Field Methods; Analytical Geochemistry; Archaeological Sediments and Bioarchaeological Evidence; Soils; Research Methods. In addition, students are able to specialise in a range of other options including: aspects of sedimentology; the archaeology of specific periods, areas or themes, or Quaternary Science. The MSc in Geoarchaeology is assessed by course work and examination (Autumn–early Summer terms), and a dissertation.
Students may obtain a Diploma in Geoarchaeology by taking the course work and examinations only.

First or good second class Honours degree or equivalent in Archaeology, Geology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Studies or related fields.
