    it’s characteristic of travellers.

         - - There’s a wide variety of interpretations of this vase — again, I
    hope someone else can supply the details: Martin Robertson, The Art of
    Vase-painting in classical Athens 186-7, who cites Lucilla Burn, Antike
    Kunst 28 (1985) 93-105; see also Alan Griffiths JHS, some years ago ...; H.
    Hoffmann, Sotades (1996?); and ????? —- but the main thing is that it may
    not be Kadmos. Or perhaps I should say it is probably NOT Kadmos.
          And besides, it’s a totally different kind of hat!
