Travel subsidies:
A number of travel awards will be available for PhD students attending this training. Awards may cover all or part of travel costs. To apply for a travel award please send the following to Sam McIntosh (s.mcintosh@reading.ac.uk):

Your PhD registration details: institution, department, supervisors, full-time or part-time, date you commenced, planned submission date;

The expected cost of your return travel, providing a quote as supporting evidence.

A 200 - 400 word outline of your PhD research;

A curriculum vitae of no more than 2 pages.
Applications for subsidies must be received by 7 June 2012. Early applications are encouraged as awards may be allocated before the closing date.
Please note you also need to register for the event; the registration process is separate from the travel awards. All applicants are advised to register for the event as soon as possible because numbers are limited.
If an award is made it is likely it will be paid by reimbursement in the four weeks following the event. No payment will be made without a receipt. Preference may be given to candidates travelling from outside London. In exceptional circumstances, a travel award may cover both transport and accommodation.

Dr Lawrence McNamara - Secrecy, security and the media: how counter-terrorism laws affect media reporting in Australia and the UK
Centre for Media and Communications Law
This seminar explores preliminary findings of research into how the media is affected by laws that govern how information about terrorism is obtained and conveyed to the public. Drawing on interviews with journalists and lawyers in Australia and Britain, Dr Lawrence McNamara will consider the relationship between security, secrecy and democratic traditions of media freedom. Not only legislation is important, but also the practices of government, police and other state agencies.
