An introduction to IELTS at Reading
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world's most popular English language test for study, work and migration.
The IELTS test is accepted by over 10,000 education and training providers worldwide. You can choose from two versions of the test: IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training, depending on the organisation you are applying to and your plans for the future.
IELTS assesses all your English skills, and is designed to reflect how English is used in real life. You can find out more about IELTS at www.ielts.org.
Take IELTS with us
How you are tested
You take the test in four parts: reading, writing, listening and speaking. It may be possible for you to take the entire test on a single day (Saturday), or the test may be administered over two days.
You are provided with online materials to help you prepare for the test when you apply.
Your overall score is based on the average of your score for each part.
The test takes place at our London Road campus, which is conveniently located close to the centre of Reading and is easily reached by public transport.
Test dates are available throughout the year – we usually offer one or two dates per month.
What happens on the test day?
On arrival at the test centre, you must register using your ID document. If you arrive too late to register, you will not be allowed to sit the test.
We provide a secure room for you to leave your personal belongings, as you can only take certain items into the test with you.
Test fees and forms
In addition to the cost of the IELTS test itself, separate fees apply if you need to:
- cancel or rearrange the test
- request a review of your results
- have your results sent to additional organisations.
In these situations, please complete the relevant IELTS form and return it to us.
Receiving your results
You can see your results online, 13 calendar days after the test. We also post a copy of your test results (the Test Report form, TRF) to the address you have given on your application form.
