Pre-sessional: course length

Two students of the Pre-sessional Programme practise their English language skills togetherHow long you will need to study

All degree courses will have a minimum English language level requirement (find out more about entry requirements by department). This will vary depending on the course, so you should check with the admissions department of your chosen subject. The amount of time that it will take to reach this level will depend on your current English language level.

The table below provides a guide to how long it will take to reach your target level based on your current level. Please contact us for individual advice. Remember to apply early to allow time to submit a visa application.

PSE4 (11 weeks) is open only to applicants who already hold a firm offer from the University of Reading. PSE5 (9 weeks) and PSE6 (6 weeks) are open to all applicants who have at least the minimum IELTS requirements for those courses as indicated in the tables above

Note that some degrees require TEEP or IELTS 7.5 and will require a longer study period on the pre-sessional programme - please contact us for further advice.

For details of entry levels using other English language tests (e.g. TOEFL Internet-Based Testing, Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic), please contact us.

Applications from students who attend the Pre-sessional Programme and then narrowly miss their entry condition may be accepted, with half a band lower than their target score.

Combined Offers

If you have received a combined offer for a degree programme plus pre-sessional English, please see your offer letter for details of the pre-sessional study period included in your unconditional offer.

We may be able to arrange for you to receive a single combined CAS so that you will only need to make one Tier 4 visa application to cover the full duration of your Pre-sessional English and your Undergraduate or Postgraduate course at the University of Reading.

You will need to meet the following criteria to be eligible for a combined CAS:

  • You have received an offer to study on the 6-week, 9-week or 11-week Pre-sessional English course with the International Study and Language Institute;
  • You have also received and accepted an offer for a Bachelors, Masters or PhD course at the University of Reading;
  • You have paid the £500 deposit for the Pre-sessional English course and, if you hold an offer for a Masters course which requires a deposit, you have also made this payment;
  • You have fulfilled all of the academic conditions attached to your Bachelors, Masters or PhD offer;
  • You have either already met the English language requirement attached to your Bachelors, Masters or PhD offer or your current IELTS score meets the minimum requirements for a combined CAS set out in the tables below;
  • The start date of your Bachelors, Masters or PhD course is less than one month after the end date of the Pre-sessional English Language programme.
