Professional Development Courses

ISLI offers a range of IPD courses for secondary and primary school teachers of English, and educators and administrators working in higher education from around the world.

All our courses can be tailor made to suit the context of different groups, and can include English language development.

International Professional Development (IPD) at Secondary and Primary School Levels

IPD: Secondary and Primary

Our four-week to three-month courses aim to broaden teachers' perspectives, upgrade their professional knowledge and skills in teaching English as a second/foreign language, and enhance their understanding of the English language and British society and culture. Courses include language teaching methodologies, a cultural programme, and a placement or visits to local schools. Participants are accommodated in local host families. For over 10 years, we have been working with the Chinese Ministry of Education, the China Scholarship Council (CSC), and local education authorities to deliver residential courses in the UK for more than a thousand school teachers of English from different parts of China. We have been offering a one-month course to teachers from the Wenzhou Education Bureau since 1998. Input on language teaching pedagogy is supplemented by an extensive programme of cultural visits and visits to schools. We have offered a similar course for teachers from Chongqing.

International Professional Development (IPD) at Higher Education level

Academic Training, including for English for university teaching

We provide courses for University teachers of English, which aim to upgrade participants’ professional knowledge and skills in teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP). We also run courses for academic staff, to develop their ability to deliver their subject areas using English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI). These courses cover both effective methodology in teaching in higher education, and the language of instruction in English. We also offer courses aimed at improving participants’ ability to write research papers, deliver presentations and attend conferences in English. Our courses for university administrators aim to develop participants’ understanding of administration in UK higher education, with a focus on student administration and support. These courses cover a range of topics on UK HE context, including student services.

Examples of our bespoke programmes include:

  • Professional development and English language for teaching and research purposes for academic
    staff from Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, China.
  • The English Language Training and Methodology for Teachers of English course for English teachers from COMSATS, Pakistan.
  • The Staff Development Programme in English for delivery of Higher of Education for English teachers from Tubingen University, Germany.

Chinese University Administrators Course CSC-collage

The focus for this course, sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Education, is how to enhance the delivery of student services in UK universities.

Input takes the form of talks from service providers in areas such as Careers and Counselling from the University of Reading and other universities, visits to other universities and observation placements.

The aim is to provide our partners with an organisational awareness of the University's student service setup. Look at best practice examples of student service systems and help develop our partners' own service agreements at their universities.
