Visiting Student Programme: A taste of UK higher education

Are your students interested in experiencing life in a UK university? If so, we can help you arrange a bespoke course that will introduce them to studying at a UK university and to British culture, as well as developing their English language and academic study skills.

The Visiting Student Programme at the University of Reading delivers a variety of academic and English language short courses throughout the year for groups of students from around the world, offering an excellent opportunity to experience a taste of higher education in the UK, in a beautiful campus environment.

We can work with your institution to create a bespoke course designed to meet the needs of your particular student group.

Student groups

Our courses are aimed at groups of international students who are currently studying at university. We can also work with you if you want to arrange a course for other international students aged 17 and over.

Students need to have intermediate-level English (CEFR B1-B2).

If you are interested in arranging a course with us, we would normally expect at least 12 students from your institution to participate.

Programme details

We design courses that aim to help your students:

  • improve their confidence and level in spoken English
  • learn essential elements of English for academic purposes
  • become familiar with British culture
  • experience UK university subject-specific study (for example, in business, economics, law, art, food science, construction management or English literature).

Your course can be arranged for any time during the year, although most courses run in the summer (from June to September).

A typical course runs for two to four weeks, but we can negotiate longer or shorter courses if required.

During their course, students will stay with host families or in self-catered university  accommodation.

Courses take place at either of our two campuses in Reading:

  • Whiteknights campus
  • London Road campus.

The Student experience

During the course, students:

  • learn about British culture and attend English language lessons and subject-specific lectures
  • undertake student-driven projects, which involve active group work and presentations
  • visit Reading and other places of cultural interest, such as London, Oxford, Bath or Windsor
  • have the opportunity to enjoy social events and leisure activities.

Why choose Reading?

The University of Reading is among the top 30 UK universities in world rankings (ranked 27th out of 84 UK universities featured in the QS World University Rankings 2021) and is among the UK's most research-intensive institutions.

Our two campuses in Reading are both exceptionally green and beautiful environments in which to study and relax. Students on the Visiting Student Programme have access to our excellent Library, technology and language-learning resources, as well as a variety of amenities.

Located in south east England, Reading is just 40 minutes from Heathrow airport, and 30 minutes by train from London and Oxford. It is a multicultural town and offers many shops, restaurants and cafes.

How else can we help your students?
