To apply for an IELTS test at the University of Reading, please visit the British Council booking site.

There are three stages to booking your IELTS test:

  • select test type, check the availability and select your test date (you can also select your Speaking test time)
  • create an account with the British Council
  • book and pay.

If you are under 18, you will need your parent or guardian to book the test for you, as they will need to provide the necessary consent.

Make sure you read and accept the IELTS Test Terms & Conditions when you apply for a test. When you sign the application form declaration, you are confirming that you read and understood the IELTS Terms & Conditions and agree to abide by them.

ID Requirements

The rules for proof of identity are very strict. You must bring the original ID document (same as the ID stated in your registration) with you on the day of the test. Copies will not be accepted and candidates will NOT be allowed to sit the IELTS test without their original ID document.

The following forms of ID are acceptable:

  • valid passport
  • valid European Union ID card
  • valid Swiss, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein ID card
  • valid UK Biometric Residence Permit Card
  • subject to prior approval, documents held by those seeking refugee status (Immigration Status Document or Travel Document).

If your ID changes before the test (e.g. you have a new passport) you must contact the IELTS Administration office immediately. If your passport is at the Home Office, you must get it back before you come to take the test. If you have any doubts about your ID, please contact the IELTS team.

Special Requirements

IELTS is designed to be a fair test. Your English language ability will be assessed objectively, regardless of any additional needs you may have.

We make every effort to cater for the special requirements of our test takers. Please read the IELTS special requirements page for further information.

If you have any additional needs that might need special arrangements, please provide a medical certificate - issued within the last two years - at the time of booking your test. Please note that you must give the centre six weeks’ notice.

Whatever special provisions you need, please contact us at ielts@reading.ac.uk.
