A social anthropologist with 30 years postgraduate professional experience I have had research/teaching/consultancy experience in extension and social development, more specifically in the following areas: gender and development; rural organisations; research methodologies and evaluation; development policy and practice. I have had field research experience in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. The academic year 2000-2001 has been spent as Visiting Professor at the Universidade de Alto Douro e Tras os Montes (UTAD) in Portugal.

Research interests have included: social movements (Brazil); rural organisations (Thailand, Portugal, Brazil); women's organisations and programmes (Malaysia, Thailand, Jordan, Kenya, Sudan, China, Turkey); migration (Portugal, U.K.); extension (Jordan, Portugal, Turkey, Thailand, Brazil).
