Wildlife on the Whiteknights Campus
To further enhance the educational experience of students studying ecological or land-based scientific disciplines at the University of Reading and to meet the University’s vision outlined in its L&T Strategy, we have proposed the establishment of a nature reserve on the Whiteknights Campus that will be managed and run by students under the auspices of CWAC and the Facilities Management Directorate (FMD).
The proposed reserve, which will comprise around 1.0 hectare of the Wilderness woodland, will be administered by a Management Committee comprised of student volunteers, academic staff and professionals from the university’s grounds maintenance team. Management strategies agreed by the Reserve Management Committee will be implemented by students working on the reserve either as volunteers or as part of their studies.
While it is common for schools to establish natural/wild areas in their grounds for educational purposes, we believe that a project of this type has not previously been undertaken in the Higher Education sector. This would make the proposed reserve a truly innovative and pioneering teaching and learning project, in addition to offering a powerful recruitment tool for Biological Sciences and the University as a whole.
The proposal has been very well received and negotiations are ongoing over the details of the reserve's establishment.
