Carbon Management

The University has identified carbon management as an area of future strategic importance and we have a strong interest in providing a leadership role in this area. The broader context is provided by the impact of climate change on the energy performance of buildings together with the increasing focus of government policies on the construction sector. The intention is to draw from the broader science base across the University while concentrating on the operational implications of market and policy drivers as they relate to the built environment. The carbon management initiative draws on expertise from each of the two established SCME research groups; we would especially seek to promote a socio-technical approach to carbon management. The underlying science base will be strengthened through the School's close links with the Walker Institute. There is also significant potential to co-operate with social scientists from a range of disciplines with interests in related aspects of climate change mitigation. Inter-disciplinary working will be important if Reading is to live up to its potential in this area.
