School indoor environment and ventilation control strategies for children's health and wellbeing

Project Overview

The purpose of this project is to investigate the indoor environmental conditions and develop control strategies to mitigate the level of contaminations for classrooms located in the urban areas in order to improve health and wellbeing of school children. The specific goals will be

1) To provide better knowledge of the relationship of indoor and outdoor air containments levels and raise public awareness of the impact of urban air pollutions on school children;

2) To develop ventilation strategies for air quality control to mitigate the level of contaminations form the urban pollutions as well as mitigation of overheating risk.

Background

The school indoor environment is one of the major concerns internationally in the context of children's education performance as well as health and wellbeing. The issue is in particular significant for schools located in the urban area that could be heavily polluted by transportations and overheated due to the Urban Heat Island.

An adequate indoor air quality depends on ventilation, which removes air pollutants, and supplies clean air. Natural ventilation is the most common system used in schools due to little energy demand. However, the drawbacks of natural ventilation could be 1) insufficient ventilation rates and 2) injection of contaminates from outdoor.

Key Objectives

One of our missions is to foster students and researchers who are future professionals working on the area of environmental quality and contribute to the improvement of citizens' health and wellbeing. This project will provide us a good opportunity to support this mission by:

  • Foster doctorate researchers' capacity in conduct real project;
  • Obtain case study materials that benefit our future research and teaching in environmental quality and wellbeing;
  • Strengthen collaborations with industry and international links;
  • Maintain our reputation in the education and research society internationally;
  • Serve the public by providing knowledge of improving living environment and health/wellbeing.
