How you'll learn
Our world-leading academics use a variety of teaching methods to ensure your studies are of the highest quality, delivered through an interdisciplinary and research-led teaching approach.
Teaching is delivered through lectures, tutorial classes and group projects, with an emphasis on practical application through vocational modules and site visits. We foster an environment where students and academics learn from one another, building on each other's experiences and knowledge to remain at the forefront of our discipline. 93% of our students were satisfied with the learning community within the School of Construction Management and Engineering in the 2017 National Student Survey.
Learn from leading experts
All of our academics are involved in both teaching and research: this enables them to feed their research directly into their teaching. Our academics write the textbooks and journal papers from which you will study: this provides you with direct access to the latest cutting-edge thinking and enables you to be part of a unique learning experience across a broad range of individual subject areas.
Our academics' research specialisms include construction economics, innovation studies, building information modelling, urban environments, technological change, Smart cities, modern methods of construction and collaborative working.
"You're taught by world-class lecturers - who better to be teaching you Construction Economics than the past-president of the Chartered Institute of Building? You can't beat quality like that."
Develop skills across disciplines
Our interdisciplinary approach enables you to develop the skills and knowledge you need to be successful in your career. Our approach enables you to analyse and discuss complex challenges from different viewpoints; to graduate with the crucial abilities to problem-solve and to become a leader in industry. You will learn to be adaptable and resilient in a constantly evolving and ever-changing sector. This approach reflects collaborative ways of working within the industry, preparing you for your career beyond graduation.
You will benefit from being part of a larger School of the Built Environment, which brings Construction Management and Engineering together with Architecture. You will also benefit from our close links with the Department of Real Estate and Planning within Henley Business School. We place an emphasis on understanding the broader context, with an appreciation for the other disciplines you will encounter and work with on surveying and construction projects.
"Interdisciplinary learning has hugely benefitted me in my role as Construction Manager. Having commercial awareness really improved my decision-making and gave me a rounded education about the industry rather than just understanding how to do construction management."
We offer world-class facilities that reflect our academic reputation, quality and ambition.
You will have access to the latest digital technology and software, including building information modelling (BIM), building energy and urban microclimate simulations, and 3D laser scanning; as well as access to our immersive virtual reality "CAVE" that enables you to interact with 3D digitised environments. You will be encouraged to explore, experiment with and learn from these innovative technologies.
We also offer access to a dedicated resource room, virtual classrooms and lecture notes. You can submit coursework electronically and take advantage of many other aspects of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to enhance your learning.
Get support while you study
We foster a culture and environment in which excellent student-staff relationships are forged; we take the time to get to know you as an individual and understand your unique aspirations, motivations and needs. Our academics are very engaged with students and can be approached for guidance and support.
