Placements in industry
You will build up a strong network of contacts through our series of events, collaborations and placements with our industry connections.
Placements offer you an excellent opportunity to experience industry, enhancing your skills and knowledge, while further developing your network. Placements can help shape your interests, enabling you to develop strong foundations for your future career.
"The University of Reading offers the opportunity to take a year out of your studies to work in industry. I found a company to sponsor me with whom I will be working for during my placement year, which is between my second and third year of study. I completed a summer placement with my sponsorship company and learned a vast amount, providing me with invaluable knowledge that I could then apply to university modules. For example, the projects module which focused on facades and cladding systems and another project on internal space design, which, conveniently, is what I spent my summer placement working on."
You can choose to complete a year in industry as part of your degree. All of our undergraduate degrees offer the opportunity to transfer onto a four-year course, which includes a one-year salaried industry placement during your third year. If you choose this option your degree title will include "with a Year in Industry". The ability to opt onto the four-year course provides you with extra flexibility in your decision-making.
You can also decide to undertake shorter summer placements in the UK or overseas, which typically last between four to eight weeks. You will be able to utilise the many networking opportunities we offer to find a placement, fully supported by our placement officer in the department.
Placements offer wide-ranging benefits:
- Extend your skillset and knowledge in a professional setting
- Learn from industry examples, which you can feed into your studies
- Develop industry relationships and build your personal network
- Enhance your CV, helping you to stand out
- Discover potential future career paths and develop your own interests.
*(Programmes with a Professional Placement Year (also known as 'Year in Industry' or 'Placement Year') are fully dependent on students securing their own placement opportunity, normally through a competitive recruitment process. The University provides dedicated career and application support for placement year students. Students who do not secure a placement or who are unable to complete the placement year due to extenuating circumstances, have the option to transfer to a three year variant of their programme with agreement from their school/department.)
Career development module
In your final year, you have the option of selecting the Career Development module, which allows you to achieve credits for your placement activity. This module helps you to understand the transition to the workplace and how to increase your chance of securing employment. Throughout this module there is a strong focus on reflection. This helps you become accustomed to the nature of the professional competence assessments, which you will undertake on your journey to becoming chartered.

"I come back to Reading once a year to deliver guest lectures. I talk about the work I do now, linking this to the students' work to give them real case-study examples. I think it's really important to break down the barrier between universities and companies, so we can teach students valuable lessons for industry."
