Dr Elmualim has acted as the coordinator for the Big Ideas research project: Sustained competitiveness of the UK construction. This is £1.7m project in collaboration with IMRCs at Loughborough and Salford Universities. He worked closely with the ICRC director in preparing the successful bid for the £3.8m Grand Challenge project in coordination with Bath and Cambridge Universities. He also acted as the research manager for the ICRC in developing a research community.
Currently Dr Elmualim is leading several collaborative projects with industry funded by the DTI as part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership scheme and the Spearhead Technology Transfer programme, including a project with the Property and Facilities Department at Nationwide and another joint project with the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) and Jacobs Ltd. In addition to other projects funded by EPSRC, Department for International Development, and The British Council in excess of £850k.
Abbas's research focuses on the development of integrative approaches to design, construction and facilities management. He has a particular interest in sustainability and digital technologies viewed from a broad socio-technical systems perspective. The adopted research approach seeks to combine engineering research methodologies with those derived from the social sciences.

Profile
Dr Abbas Elmualim is a lecturer and Coordinator of the Sustainable Design, Construction and FM research group. He has a BSc (Hons) in Architecture from the University of Khartoum and Masters Degrees in the Environmental Design of Buildings from the Welsh School of Architecture (UWCC) and Business Information Technology from Cranfield University. He also has a PhD in Sustainability and Renewable Energy from the University of Reading. Dr Elmualim has acted as the coordinator for the Big Ideas research project: sustained competitiveness of the UK construction. This is £1.7m project in collaboration with IMRCs at Loughborough and Salford Universities. He worked closely with the ICRC director in preparing the successful bid for the £3.8m Grand Challenge project in coordination with Bath and Cambridge Universities. He also acted as the research manager for the ICRC in developing a research community. Currently Dr Elmualim is leading several collaborative projects with industry funded by the DTI as part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership scheme and the Spearhead Technology Transfer programme in excess of £750K, including a project with the Property and Facilities Department at Nationwide and another joint project with the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) and Jacobs Ltd. Abbas's research focuses on the development of integrative approaches to design, construction and facilities management. He has a particular interest in sustainability and digital technologies viewed from a broad socio-technical systems perspective. The adopted research approach seeks to combine engineering research methodologies with those derived from the social sciences.
