Workplace Inclusivity and Women in Science, Engineering and Technology

The School of Construction Management and Engineering has a WISE Group, established in 2009, to promote Workplace Inclusivity and Women in Science, Engineering and Technology.

In 2009, the School won the prestigious Athena SWAN Charter Silver Award that recognises excellence in science, engineering and technology (SET) employment for women in higher education.

The WISE Terms of Reference, promoting and maintaining inclusivity in SCME, are:

  • Playing to individual strengths in the context of a diverse workforce;
  • Supporting events for networking and skills development within SCME;
  • Facilitating opportunities for networking with industry colleagues;
  • Promoting peer mentoring schemes such as the UKRC scheme for females;
  • Supporting the transition for students from the learning environment into industry.

In 2007, the School had above UK-average proportions of female students on both undergraduate (20.3%) and postgraduate (approximately 36%) courses in building (compare UKRC, 2008).

The WISE Group encourages all female students and staff, as well as female returners and male returners, in meeting their aspirations in Construction Management and Engineering.
