School of Construction Management and Engineering included in RICS Global Showcase

The School of Construction Management and Engineering is delighted to have been included in the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Global Showcase for Best Practice in Sustainable Development in Surveying Higher Education. The Global Showcase is part of an initiative to drive the adoption of sustainable development principles in built environment higher education in support of the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) principles. The mission of the PRME initiative is to inspire and champion responsible management education, research and thought leadership globally.

In January 2013, RICS invited all of its accredited universities to submit examples of how they are addressing the following issues:

  • The university's institutional ethos
  • Level of integration of sustainable development built into surveying courses
  • Engagement in sustainable development research
  • Links with industry and the professions within the RICS 'footprint' of land, real estate and the built environment
  • Engagement in North-South and South-South partnerships

The School was selected by a panel of judges as one of six inaugural signatories to the initiative. For further information see:

Professor Stuart Green, Head of School, commented: "We are pleased to receive this recognition of our commitment to embedding sustainability in built environment education. The principles of sustainable development are themed throughout all our RICS-accredited undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes. Significant use is made of integrated projects to expose students to the variety of stakeholder interests which must be factored into localised enactments of sustainability. A further important guiding principle within the School of Construction Management and Engineering is that the teaching of sustainability should be underpinned by research."
