BIM and beyond: MSc Information Management for Design, Construction and Operation

The School of Construction Management and Engineering is accepting applications to our new MSc programme in Information Management for Design, Construction and Operation.

The programme provides an opportunity to develop expertise in the expanding field of information management for built environment and infrastructure. Students apply the latest industry research and fundamental theoretical knowledge in order to understand and lead emerging practice across design, construction and operation. The distinctive focus is on the use, operation, and implementation of information systems in the sector, including the management of changes to technology, processes and people.

Modern built environment professionals need to understand and support information requirements across the project and asset life cycle. They need to develop and implement project and organisational level information management processes. And they need to manage a diverse range of data and interfaces throughout the design, construction and operation process.

Construction projects have always had high information intensity and getting the right information to the right people at the right time (and at the right cost) is key to reliable and productive delivery of products and services.

The increased use of building information modelling (BIM) and advances in technology such as mobile data are creating opportunities and driving changes in the sector that are being felt by firms, projects and people.

As data is liberated from paper, and as buildings and assets become more complex, clients and operators increasingly expect integrated and meaningful information to be embedded within, and delivered alongside, the physical product.

Firms in the supply chain and client organisations need to find ways of exploiting information as a strategic asset. Not least the proprietary knowledge that differentiates them from others and is a source of competitive advantage.

The course is the latest of the School's portfolio of advanced management programmes and takes its place alongside our well-regarded and internationally-recognised MSc courses in Construction, Cost and Project Management. The course content combines professional knowledge with real-world research with leading firms and projects. Learning is intensely collaborative and integrates internationally-renowned academic and industry expertise with student-centred research and practical problem-solving. Students will graduate with the fundamental knowledge and explanatory frameworks necessary to respond effectively to the future and to lead and shape change. The MSc can be studied on a flexible part-time basis or as a one-year full-time course.
