Dan White (BA Archaeology & History 2009)Tell us briefly about yourself and career.
Since graduating from Reading after three fantastic years studying Archaeology and History I found myself working in marketing - it's not something I originally planned to do, but since starting I haven't looked back. I now work as a self-employed Digital Marketing Consultant based in Exeter but with clients across the UK.Why did you choose to study at the University of Reading?
The archaeology department had a fantastic reputation with a brilliant choice of modules to pick from. As a joint honours student I enjoyed the flexibility the degree offered, as I was able to complete such a wide variety of different modules from other departments too.What was the best bit about living and studying in Reading?
The campus is beautiful throughout the year and was always a great place to explore. Studying at Reading meant you were able to work with some of the leading researchers in the field with a group of friends who were equally passionate as you about the topicWhat top tips would you give to students who are beginning their studies?
Try everything. University is one of those things you're probably only going to do once so make the most of every opportunity - both socially and academically, Although it may seem like a long time when you're there, 3 years passes incredibly quickly.What are you up to now? How did you get there?
After graduation I stayed at Reading and volunteered with the University of Reading's Museums and Special Collections Service (UMASCS) service in the Plant Science Department. The skills I gained got me my first job, and from there I got into marketing. Then onto digital marketing.
The last few years I have been self-employed working as a digital marketing consultant under my own name, Dan White Marketing. This has led to some incredible opportunities including a project in Utah (where the picture was taken). I'm also the co-founder of The Way With Words - which works with brands to sort out their verbal identity so they can communicate more effectively with their customers.What would be your top tips for students interested in working in this sector?
Keep up to speed. Digital marketing is evolving at an incredible rate, so invest the time in mixing with the right people via Twitter and LinkedIn who are at the forefront of the industry.
Digital marketing is also one of those rare industries where if you're keen to try it you can literally launch something from your bedroom, so even if you're mildly curious about the industry have a go at writing a blog, filming vlogs or building a website. You'll learn pretty quickly whether or not you'll enjoy it.How has the University of Reading and the Careers Centre helped in your chosen career path?
The careers centre was particularly good at getting you started. I used them on more than one occasion to get my CV checked over. The online job boards were also hugely useful in finding positions that you wouldn't find elsewhere.What are your top tips for students graduating this year? What should they be doing to secure the job they want?
Try doing something that stands out - so be bold and creative. Approach the person doing the hiring and try and get to know them better. You'll be much more memorable than 1 of 100 CVs. What does the University mean to you and what is your favourite memory?
Reading was a fantastic place to study and develop. Although clichéd it also gives you friends for life. My favourite moment was in our final year when we got to go on private tour of one of the new exhibitions at the British Museum.
