Beschreibung
The glass orb on a cast iron stand forms a glass lamp used in lacemaking. The glass was filled with water and inverted into the holder. A candle was then positioned close to the globe so that the light shone on it and was reflected onto the lacemaker’s pillow.

Massingham, 'Country Relics' (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1939)] – 'But the last object of all, the lace-maker's light, also from Burford, is certainly of cottage origin. It is a large glass globe with a tapering handle of glass likewise, and this is slipped into a plain heavy cylinder of lead with a wide, round base. A candle was stood close up to the globe on its stand in such a position that the light shone upon it and was reflected upon the pillow.'
