The Hayes family were long- established Kentish yeoman. Owletts Farm was built about 1773. The estate passed from the Hayes family to the Baker family by marriage. Most of the land was sold in the 1890s, except for Owlett's and a few acres which are now in the hands of the National Trust, with Mr. H.E.Baker still in residence. A detailed history of the Hayes family is provided by ARNOLD, Ralph. Yeoman of Kent : an account of Richard Hayes, 1725-1790, and of the village of Cobham in which he lived and farmed.
