MSc/PGD in Renewable Energy

The Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering Group of the University of Reading is based in the School of Construction Management and Engineering. Members of staff are involved in  teaching, mainly on the MSc/PGD course on Renewable Energy: Technology and Sustainability, as well as in research and additional activities.

The part of the Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering Group based in the Engineering building has previously been known as the "Energy Group" and further information is available by post or e-mail.

Research interests include Wind, Biomass, Energy Solutions and Energy Policy. In the past, much work has been done in Hydro Power, especially Micro Hydro, and Solar Energy, but the members of staff involved in these areas have since retired. There is ongoing interest in Energy efficiency as well.

The number of web sites related to the subject Renewable Energy is increasing rapidly, so the Energy Group is building up a list.

A Building Integrated PhotoVoltaic roof is a feature of the Engineering building and detailed monitoring is being done by the Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering Group.

Teaching

A revised MSc and PGD course: Renewable Energy: Technology and Sustainability has been approved to run from October 2006. The new course is based on the internationally recognised M.Sc. and Postgraduate Diploma course on Renewable Energy and the Environment which has been running for over 20 years. The revised course will cover similar material to the old course, but will cover a wider range of subjects in slightly less depth. Applications for the revised course are now invited.

The PGD course requires nine month's of full-time study. The MSc course covers twelve months' of full-time study and students do a project related to renewable energy, as part of this course. Further information about the course is available. It is also possible to take the first part of the course to qualify for a PGCert.

Scholarships are available, such as a few:

  • from NERC for applicants from an environmental science background, whose interest is the environmental aspects of the course.
Please contact the Course Administrator for further information.

Staff of the Energy Group have also been involved in teaching on the Undergraduate courses in the School of Construction Management and Engineering. The undergraduate courses in Mechanical Engineering are in the process of being phased out.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

The group undertakes consultancy work and is prepared to consider contracts with outside organisations for collaborative projects and the provision of test facilities. Staff are involved in organising conferences on behalf of their professional associations, for the Energy Group and on a private basis. The University of Reading offers good conference facilities. Group members are also frequently requested to lecture to a wide variety of audiences.

The Group has had close involvement with the Ashden Awards over the past few years.

Another recent link has been with the Asia Link project run in conjunction with the University College of Borås in Sweden and the University of Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta in Indonesia.
