University responsibilities

Jane, who is Head of the Department of Applied Linguistics, joined the University of Reading in 2001 as the Director of the English Pronunciation Research Unit (EPRU). She is Senior Lecturer in Phonetics, and convenor of BA programmes in English Language and Applied English Language Studies. She also jointly convenes BA programmes in English Language with a Modern Foreign Language with staff from the departments of French, German and Italian Studies, the BA in English Language and Literature with colleagues in English and American Literature, and the BA in English Language and Television with colleagues in Film, Theatre and Television.

Jane is Undergraduate Admissions Tutor for the Department of Applied Linguistics. Her outreach activities include the annual organisation of courses for A Level English Language, French and German teachers, and the organisation of workshops on teaching English pronunciation (2004, 2005, 2006), Speech Prosody in Atypical Populations (2007), and the British Association of Clinical Linguistics's colloquium (2008).

Teaching

Jane has been involved in tertiary level teaching since 1992. She has taught in Japan and Hong Kong as well as in the UK, at the University of Leeds, Leeds Metropolitan University, City University and University College London.

At Reading, Jane contributes modules in Phonetics and World Englishes to the BA in Applied English Language Studies and joint programmes, the MA in Applied Linguistics, the MA in English Language Teaching (campus-based and distance study modes), and BSc and MSc programmes in Speech and Language Therapy.

Jane was the recipient of the University of Reading Faculty of Arts and Humanities Student Award for Teaching Excellence, session 2004/05.

Research Interests
Jane's PhD research was on speech rhythm in Hong Kong English, and she is currently writing a book on Hong Kong English for Edinburgh University Press with colleagues in Hong Kong and Macau. Her research interests are in the areas of English phonetics and phonology and English pronunciation and intelligibility, including the description of Hong Kong English, other World Englishes and learner Englishes. She is willing to supervise PhD students in these areas. She is also interested in the phonetics and phonology of English in atypical populations, and has held ESRC research funding for a project on Intonation deficits in Williams syndrome with Vesna Stojanovik of the Department of Clinical Language Sciences. Jane regularly reviews journal articles for TESOL Quarterly, JIPA and World Englishes, and has reviewed book proposals for publishers in the area of English pronunciation teaching and learning.
External Roles
Jane is joint convenor of the Pronunciation Special Interest Group of IATEFL, acting treasurer of the British Association of Clinical Linguistics, and on the advisory board of the English Language Education Society of Japan. She is also a regular contributor to the University College London Summer Course in English Phonetics, teaching on the IPA Certificate Strand, and is an examiner for the IPA Certificate of Proficiency in the Phonetics of English.
Membership of Professional Bodies
Jane is a member of the International Phonetic Association, the International Association of World Englishes, the British Association of Academic Phoneticians, the International Association for Forensic Phonetics and Acoustics, the British Association for Applied Linguistics, the Linguistics Association of Great Britain, and is associate member of the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
