- BA in English and Social Anthropology (Queen's University, Belfast); MA in English Language and Linguistics (Queen's University, Belfast); PhD in Sociolinguistics (University of Ulster).
- University responsibilities
- Joanne joined the University of Reading in September 2009 as a Teaching and Academic Fellow and she is Part 2 Co-ordinator for the BA in English Language programme.

Joanne has been involved in tertiary level teaching since 2002. She taught linguistics at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown, and tutored BA undergraduates in communication, marketing and advertising. In 2006 she successfully completed the SEDA Associate HE Teacher Award, part of the PGCHEP.
Joanne currently teaches/contributes to the following modules on the BA in English Language programme:

- LS1ELS: English Language and Society
- LS1ELU: English Language in Use
- LS2AD Approaches to Discourse
- LS2SL Sociolinguistics
- LS2RM: Research Methods
Joanne also contributes to the teaching of the MA in Applied Linguistics (MAAL) and MA in English Language Teaching (MA ELT):

- Research interests

Joanne has recently completed her PhD in Linguistics (at the University of Ulster); her thesis focused on gender and discourse within the workplace. She has also completed various research projects including an attitudinal survey of the Ulster Scots dialect across Northern Ireland; a quantitative study of actively spoken Ulster Scots; and qualitative and quantitative research into the effect of early intervention on young children's learning outcomes. Her research interests include sociolinguistics, language and gender, workplace discourse, and the construction of gendered identities. She am currently working on the publication of a volume based on her PhD thesis, and several research papers.
