Research

The Department believes very strongly in the connection between research and teaching. Having teachers who are active researchers means that students are exposed to the latest thinking in a particular field of study. It also means, we hope, that some of the enthusiasm and excitement that we derive from carrying out research and writing will be transmitted to students in our lectures, seminars and classes.

n addition to undergraduate teaching, the Department has an extensive postgraduate programme, attracting postgraduate students from overseas as well as from this country. It operates a unique joint research training programme with University College London, Royal Holloway, Oxford and Cambridge, which constitutes the largest postgraduate research forum in Italian Studies in this country.

This year the Department will also host the annual Society for Italian Studies Postgraduate Colloquium.
The Department is home to the Centre for Modern Italian History (CMIH) and the Centre for Italian Women's Studies. A further important dimension of the work of the Department is The Italianist. This is a multi-disciplinary journal with an international reputation. It was founded at Reading and is now edited jointly with  the Department of Italian at the University of Cambridge.
