Postgraduate
Programmes and Funding
The Department offers a taught MA in Italian Studies (one
year full-time, two years part-time). The MA is principally intended as a
preparation for those intending to proceed to research in Italian Studies at
doctoral level. It gives students the
freedom to devise a course of study negotiated with the department on the basis of their needs and interests and the
department’s teaching resources. A wide range of options are available in areas such as Italian literature, history, cinema and women’s studies.
In addition the Department offers a more specialist
MA in
Modern Italian History (taught in conjunction with the Department of History).
Details of MAs are currently in the process of revision. For the current
regulations, see the on-line Postgraduate Prospectus.
The Department has a strong
postgraduate tradition, and in recent years there have been on average around
twenty students at any one time studying for higher degrees by research (MPhil
or PhD).
The Department offers specialist
supervision across a broad range of subjects, including medieval culture and
literature, early modern social and political history, cinema, women’s studies,
modern poetry and fiction, linguistics, and computer applications. Click here
for further details of staff research
interests.
Dissertations may be written in either
English or Italian, and the Department particularly welcomes applications from
graduates of Italian universities.
The Department operates a joint
postgraduate training programme with the Italian departments of University
College London, Royal Holloway, Oxford and Cambridge. This constitutes the
largest postgraduate forum in the country, and enables students to meet and
share ideas with a wide range of staff and researchers working in similar or
related areas to their own.
