Introduction
he Oxford Companion to Italian Literature
is a major addition to the well-known series. It
is a substantial
reference-work, comprising some 2,400 entries and over 450,000 words in total,
and aims to be both useful and interesting to specialists and
non-specialists alike. It reflects the most up-to-date scholarship and
criticism, and covers the whole of Italian literature from the the 13th
century to the present, including dialect literature and literature written in
Latin by Italian authors. There is a substantial number of entries covering
other branches of culture (philosophy, the media, linguistic history, other
arts), social and political history, as well as literary criticism and theory.
The emphasis on context is a major distinguishing feature of the Companion
as against existing works of a similar character. The large number of
contributors includes prominent specialists from the U.K., Italy, the U.S.A. and
Australia. The Companion has now been translated into Italian (with CD-ROM) as the Enciclopedia Oxford/Zanichelli della Letteratura Italiana.
