Which courses are available?

At Reading, you can study German alone or in conjunction with another subject as 'Combined Honours'.

As well as studying Single Honours German you can combine German with any of the following subjects:

The choice is yours!

Whichever combination of subjects you do eventually decide to take, in your first year at Reading you will have to gain a total of 120 credits. You can do this by taking two major courses in German together with eighty credits from two other subjects, and dividing your other eighty credits between two or more other subjects. But you must remember: for most subjects if you wish to continue to Finals you must take at least forty credits in this subject in this first year. This is designed to give you a chance to test the courses before making a final choice. You might like to try out a new subject that you may not have had a chance to study at school- Typography, Philosophy or History of Art - for instance, or you could start a new language - Italian, say - from scratch.

In the Summer Term, students in their first year take what are called their Part 1 examinations. After these examinations most students drop one of the subjects they studied in their first year. This means that  if, at the end of your first year, you find that your chosen course is not to your liking, you can almost always transfer to a different degree course, providing that you have passed the relevant subjects (and, normally, obtained forty credits) in your first year.
