Background

My interest in track days can be traced back a few years when a friend asked me to take part in a karting grand prix. I had so much fun that I wanted to get back in a kart straight away, despite the fact that I was too old for such things. So I progressed from the usual single-engine indoor karts to the faster twin engined outdoor karts. Then, in 2002 I had a go at a formula first driving experience at Silverstone.

This involved a few laps behind a pace car then 20 minutes of flat out driving. I got the fastest lap time, but only ended up fifth as I spun off the track and got called into the pits for a telling off. But this got me hooked. I went back to Silverstone for another experience: this time in their caterham.

To be honest, this was rather disappointing. The car was great, but we only had a few laps and it was all over. I needed to find a way to get more track time without paying a ridiculous amount. The only way was to buy a cheap track day car. BACK
