Bone hinge

Most of the animal bone recovered from site represents food waste. Some bones were, however, carved into objects such as bone hairpins. This fragment appears to be derived from a leg bone which is decorated with simple lines and has two holes. It is probably a hinge from a large wooden box.
The illustration above shows a similar hinge excavated from another Roman site. Multiple hinges would be joined together with wood and small wooden projections would jut out through the holes. The illustration on the left shows more clearly exactly how they would have been put to use. (Both illustrations from McWhirr 1988, 58)
