The 2002 Season Diary

If you would like to read about what happened during the 6th season of excavation at Silchester, Insula IX read the 2002 daily diary chronicling the excavation's progress day by day as it happened.  Archaeological objectives for 2002 centred upon revealing the layout of the early buildings of House I and examining the context of these buildings. We expected to excavate more 1st and 2nd century structures as well as their associated wells and cess pits

The Secret Life of Post Holes
A new feature for 2002 is a Roman Garden, created by Nancy Fulford and Mary Hancock, at the entrance to the excavation The garden shows the types of plants and herbs grown by Romans in Britain.
If you've ever wondered about ancient construction methods, visit our page detailing how post holes were initially erected and how they develop over the centuries into what we excavate as archaeologists.
Visit our page of fascinating views of the excavation as we rarely get to see it, with photographs from cherry-pickers and microlites.
