Week One Finds

Stylus

Small Find Ref: 1950
Context 3200

This is a stylus. It was found during cleaning of the site in the first few days. These were used for writing

Iron Hook

Small Find Ref: 1963
Context 3020

This is an iron hook. It was found during cleaning in the north-east corner of the site

Purbeck marble inscription

Small Find Ref: 1964
Context

This is an inscription on Purbeck Marble. Other examples of this date to the first century AD. It was, unfortunately, found during cleaning of the site during the first few days.

Stamped pottery

This is a stamped peice of pottery.

Rotary quernstone fragment

Small Find Ref: 1990
Context 2780

This is a fragment of a rotary quern. It was found within the make-up of a floor layer in Building 1 / Block 1, in the south east corner of our trench. It is made from Quartz Congomerate of the Old Red Sandstone which comes from the Forest of Dean

Lead strip fragment

Small Find Ref: 1999
Context 3100

This is a fragment of lead strip. It is decorated and may have been intended for use as a bracelet. The decoration is similar to that on other bracelets founds at Silchester.

Figurine fragment

Small Find Ref: 2024
Context

This arm is probably from part of a figurine or statue. It was found during cleaning. Click on the thumbnail for a larger version of the image.
