As Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Williams has responsibility for the leadership of the University's research and innovation strategy and represents the University in its external engagement in this regard. She is a member of the Vice-Chancellor's Executive group, chairs the University Board for Research and Innovation and is leading the University's preparation for the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework.


Christine Williams was appointed the first Hugh Sinclair Professor of Nutrition at the University of Reading in 1995. She served as the Head of the School of Food Biosciences between 2003 and 2006 and in August 2006 was elected to the Dean of Life Sciences. Before taking up the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) role, she acted as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise) from 2008 to 2010.

Professor Williams was awarded her PhD from Guy's Hospital Medical School in 1979 and held a Readership in Human Nutrition at the University of Surrey before taking up her chair at Reading in 1995. Her research is primarily concerned with understanding the impact of dietary fats on human health, particularly in relation to cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance. She is frequently involved in providing advice to government and industry on matters relating to dietary policy and actively engages in dissemination of nutritional science to the public. In 1999 she was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine Gold Medal in Nutrition for her contribution to scholarship and education in nutrition. Between 1998-2001 she was the President of the UK Nutrition Society, she chaired the BBSRC Agri-Food Committee, 2003-2006 and is a Governor and Member of Council of the British Nutrition Foundation. Professor Williams was awarded an OBE for services to higher education and nutritional science in the Queen's Birthday Honours, announced on 15 June 2013.
