Wolfenden Lecture - Section 28: A Poisonous Law and Legacy

Thursday 24 May

7.00pm, doors at 6.30pm

G11, Henley Business School, Whiteknights campus

Peter Tatchell, Director, Peter Tatchell Foundation

Join us, on the 30th anniversary of the enactment of Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 (in England, Wales and Scotland), when Peter Tatchell, internationally renowned LGBT+ and human rights activist, will be speaking about, “Section 28: A Poisonous Law and Legacy”.

The amendment of the Act stated that a local authority “shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality” or “promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.”

This special event is named in memory of Lord Wolfenden, who was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading from 1950–64. Lord Wolfenden chaired a committee that wrote the 1957 ‘Wolfenden Report’, a key milestone in LGBT+ history in the UK.

Admission is free, places are limited.
